Dojang Etiquette

Although The School promotes a friendly atmosphere and training should be friendly and relaxed there are certain rules of etiquette for the Dojang which students need to be aware of whilst being a member of The School. These are as follows:

  • Students should bow toward the flags when entering and leaving the Dojang.
  • Students should bow and say ‘Pil Sung’ [Certain Victory] as a formal greeting or farewell and not simply say ‘Hello’ or ‘Good-bye’.
  • Students should always bow before and after speaking to the Instructor or senior Students, and use terms of respect such as ‘Yes Sir’ (or Ma’am), ‘No Sir’, or ‘Pardon Me’, etc.
  • Students should not face the Instructor or flags when adjusting their uniforms.
  • Students should memorise the names of all their Instructors. Instuctors are to be addressed as ‘Mr.’, ‘Miss’, or ‘Mrs.’, and Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi as ‘Dojunim’.
  • All Black Belts will be addressed formally as ‘Mr.’, ‘Miss’, or ‘Mrs’.
  • Any Instructors commands or corrections should be answered with a polite confirmation such as ‘Thank you Sir!’ (or Ma’am as appropriate).
  • If a command or correction has not been understood, wait for an appropriate moment then politely ask the Instructor to clarify or explain further.
  • Students should move quickly to line up and should stand at attention in belt order to await commands from the Instructor(s).
  • If accidental contact is made during training, Students should stop and bow to each other and apologise. The other should show acceptance that this was an unintended accident.
  • Never be disrespectful toward the Instructor.
  • If the Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi enters the Dojang, the Senior Student will call class to attention and everyone will turn toward the flags.
  • All Belt promotions must be authorised through your Chief Instructor, Choi Kwang Do Martial Arts International on the consent of Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi only.
  • Students should observe common standards of hygiene, such as keeping your Dobok clean and presentable, keeping your bodies clean so as not to be offensive and keeping nails short to prevent injury.
  • Profanity, obscene gestures or actions, unnecessary roughness toward a fellow student or uncontrolled temper, or other actions unbecoming of a martial artist are strictly prohibited.
  • Leaning on walls, sprawling on the floor, and other slouchy behaviour will not be accepted.
  • Horseplay shows disrespect toward the Instructor and other Students and therefore has no place in a Choi Kwang Do Dojang.
  • Smoking, chewing gum/tobacco, eating and drinking are prohibited in the Dojang and during lessons.
  • No Jewellery is to be worn in the Dojang. Wedding rings are permitted as long as they are taped up and secure. No other rings will be permitted as they could cause injury to other students.

Always remember that you are learning a potentially deadly Martial Art. Students are never to initiate violence and must conduct themselves in a responsible manner both inside and outside the Dojang.
